Joe Flanigan is immediately recognizable to any fan of classic sci-fi from his starring role as John Sheppard in the beloved space exploration series Stargate Atlantis, which ran for five incredible, action-packed years, often crossing over with the ten-year hit Stargate SG-1 during their overlapping seasons. The Stargate franchise means a lot to many, many people, with beautiful production design, fantastic characters and storylines, and a whole lot of heart, so I’ve been looking forward to speaking with Joe, especially since his background is especially unusual for someone in the arts. After starting out as an advance man for the White House and a stint at a magazine, he took up acting on a whim, which ultimately became a lifelong profession. But he also remains heavily involved in social and political issues, and has been focusing on those topics more than ever these days, given the current political climate, so sitting down to hear his insights on not only Hollywood but also the state of the world was a fascinating and very different experience for me, and I’m thrilled to share our conversation.
