Joe Flanigan

Joe Flanigan’s starring role as John Sheppard in the beloved space exploration series Stargate Atlantis has brought viewers joy for decades. The show ran for five incredible, action-packed years, often crossing over with the ten-year hitΒ Stargate SG-1 during their overlapping seasons. The Stargate franchise means a lot to many people, with beautiful production design, fantastic characters and storylines, and a whole lot of heart, so I’ve been looking forward to speaking with Joe, especially since his background is unusual for someone in the arts. After starting out as an advance man for the White House and a stint at a magazine, he took up acting on a whim and ended up developing a real passion for it. But he also remains heavily involved in social matters and has been focusing on those topics more than ever since the wildfires and pandemic, so sitting down to hear his insights on not only Hollywood but also the state of the world was a very different and interesting experience, and I’m pleased to share our conversation today.

Joe Flanigan and David Hewlett made Stargate Atlantis what it was. They gave it so much character and life. Thanks for doing an ep with him!

  2. marcoPollo says:

    Omg his terminator voice hahahaha

  3. Leviathan says:

Ok now that you’ve broached the classic sci-fi market surely you will bring us more talks with people from this genre and era??? I need an episode with Ben Browder STAT.

  4. Leo D says:

Imo Joe is a criminally underrated actor.

  5. Anonymous says:

I’ve seen him at several conventions. Super funny and friendly to everyone.

  6. Kronosology says:

I love Joe but normally see him answering more superficial questions at cons and stuff. His career path is so wild. How do you go from the white house to magazines to iconic sci fi star?? XD

  7. MarvelMadness says:

He should appear in one of Jason’s DC movies. He’s make a great villain if the doppleganger episode is any indication.

  8. Jupiterian says:

The chemistry of the SGA cast was insane. When it ended, I felt like I’d lost a family.

  9. Evangelioness says:

Can Joe be our next president? I vote for him.

  10. Scoobysnacks says:

I came to Stargate late in life but am now an avid fan. I enjoyed hearing from the man behind Sheppard, who is probably my favorite character in either show.

  11. Lem says:

Excellent interview. Kept the conversation flowing but no talking over the guest or hurrying them through. That’s how it’s done, folks.

I’d be kind of intimidated talking to Joe like this, especially when he’s going into the political and socials stuff. But maybe that’s cause I’m not informed enough and wouldn’t know how to answer. It was fascinating hearing him talk about all that though.

  13. Anonymous says:

Best hugger, thought I would melt into a puddle right there πŸ₯°

  14. Catriona says:

I wish Joe would do more conventions and interviews but he seems to travel with family a lot and be very involved with his kids so I guess he doesn’t have time sadly

  15. 1NXduke says:

Did you ever consider doing reunion type episodes with multiple people? I want to say you’d be a great person to host a Merlin reunion πŸ˜‰

  16. EyesWideShut says:

Fantastic interview. No superficial questions, just real talk.

  17. ThievesGuild says:

IMO Joe should play a video game adaptation characterr like Nathan Drake from Uncharted.

  18. Anonymous says:

I’m kind of mystified by the fact that I just learned more about political and social psychology from this episode than I ever did in school lolol

  19. MarxBros says:

These types of lowkey chat podcasts are always the best.

  20. Anonymous says:

Nothing but respect for Joe Flanigan. He’s chill.

  21. AKA Jorge says:

Bring David Hewlett on next! Hell bring them on TOGETHER!!!!!!

  22. fairyfire says:

Huge fan. You’ve earned a new subscriber!

  23. Lana Proudfeet says:

Joe still has the John Sheppard vibe. I swear this felt like listening to Sheppard report to Weir but with present day commentary πŸ˜„

  24. Chuckle and Hide says:

Perfect set. Perfect cast. Perfect show.

  25. Stevie Grimes says:

Joe’s comment at the end makes it sound like you’ll have a follow-up at some point to do another session together, which would be awesome…

I’ve been feeling like literally every actor I like is letting me down these days with who they are in real life. Joe seems like he’s got real integrity, so I’m praying, PRAYING do you understand??? that he never changes πŸ’—

  27. TeamDrake says:

It was so interesting hearing about how he got to Stargate and all the drama with his agents. Makes me glad I’m not in this industry though tbh.

  28. Mauricio C says:

Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis were two shows my entire family never missed an episode of and invariably sat down together to watch week to week. I miss those days!

  29. general_eon says:

I always liked that Joe played Sheppard in such a calm, understated way. I guess that’s just how the dude is in real life lol. Love hearing him talk about this stuff.

  30. A Quiet Gaff says:

Such an interesting point that after working for the president, some magazine bloke is hardly intimidating. White house prepared him well!

  31. Bilbo's Bear says:

Wonderful show with great talks with great people πŸ™‚

  32. Jonas says:

I miss the days of solid 20-23 episodes per season EVERY YEAR on a regular schedule with reruns in between. Now we get this bullshit streaming system of 5-8 episodes every few years MAYBE if we’re lucky, often just cancelled. Sad how the industry’s gone downhill.

  33. DL says:

LOVED this interview. Joe is one of the most down to earth people in Hollywood and seems like a genuinely nice dude.

  34. MJ says:

I would actually pay to hug this guy. I would.

  35. MCEtcher says:

Joe and Jason should team up for a new show. But Jason is too busy being Mr. Hollywood these days. Sad.

  36. JyroscopicAnatomy says:

I need an epilogue for Sheppard showing him and O’Neill sitting at a lake and fishing with Beau Bridges.

  37. Ben Farmer says:

I’d love to see him in something new. It was amazing seeing him in See more recently and proved he’s still got it.

  38. Fortiscue says:

Loved this interview! Nice job on both counts!

  39. Hot to Katratzi says:

Really good interview. Joe has great insights and stories from over the years.

  40. Dolothrian's Arrow says:

I will pray to the tv gods every day for an SGA reunion movie someday.

  41. lothloriensghost says:

I literally just finished rewatching SGA last night and not kidding, may start up the series again tonight hahaha

  42. yyuryyub says:

With the replicators, perilous wraith alliance, flying city, and Michael’s hybrids, they could’ve done so much over another few seasons. Ugh I need more.

  43. Savannah says:

Please keep these coming! Awesome to hear actors talking so casually!

  44. PowerMilk00e says:

My favorite cast member from SGA. I met him three times at cons and he’s the nicest.

  45. Lee Baler says:

Enjoyed the hell out of this and subscribing now.

  46. Mirror Mirror says:

When he mentioned the White House team threatening people, it reminded me of the whole “power doesn’t need to announce itself.” The people with the most insecurity scream the loudest.

  47. C Ferguson says:

I’ve watched the Stargate series so many times over the years and now am watching them with my kids, and it’s all coming full circle.

  48. McGuffin says:

    Great talk.

  49. Frankie says:

Flanagan seems like such a humble guy who just wants the world to be a better place but knows humans too well ;p

  50. CBTurner says:

I really enjoyed this talk, though I wish we could’ve heard his thoughts on See. It was so cool to see him back on screen with David. They all should’ve had scenes with Jason as a group though. SGA reunion!
