Joe Flanigan

Joe Flanigan’s starring role as John Sheppard in the beloved space exploration series Stargate Atlantis has brought viewers joy for decades. The show ran for five incredible, action-packed years, often crossing over with the ten-year hit Stargate SG-1 during their overlapping seasons. The Stargate franchise means a lot to many people, with beautiful production design, fantastic characters and storylines, and a whole lot of heart, so I’ve been looking forward to speaking with Joe, especially since his background is unusual for someone in the arts. After starting out as an advance man for the White House and a stint at a magazine, he took up acting on a whim and ended up developing a real passion for it. But he also remains heavily involved in social matters and has been focusing on those topics more than ever since the wildfires and pandemic, so sitting down to hear his insights on not only Hollywood but also the state of the world was a very different and interesting experience, and I’m pleased to share our conversation today.

Joe’s one of the sweetest actors i’ve met. I was insanely nervous and he was so nice and reassuring. I got a great picture out of it!

Flanigan should be advising the next democratic candidate because god fucking knows we need better people in office.

It’s true, you really need to be a jack of all trades these days. If you’re just getting into the business, being an actor doesn’t cut it for most people. It’s invaluable to know a lot of other production related skills too nowadays.

Some of the industry stuff you two talked about really disturbs me. Like how did that director get away with blatantly screwing him over like that and not get into trouble? How were his agents so useless and he’s paying them out the ass? Sounds like a stressful nightmare to me.

I’ve heard so many people talk about meeting him and how wonderful he is. I’ve never gotten to a convention but I’m hoping to see him in person someday, he seems so real.

I find it a bit unsettling that he mentioned politics being an extension of storytelling. He’s not wrong, and he’s very right about people who may be great leaders not appealing to the public who wants a show.

Bro has some wild stories that make me side-eye my childhood dream of being an actor🤨

Joe! Like she said, never feel that you’re not conniving scum like some other people in hollywood! It’s something to be proud of!

I don’t know a single SG fan who has anything bad to say about this man.

I figured I’m middle-aged now and would be over my younger self’s crush on Colonel Sheppard. Met Joe recently at a convention and…nope. Definitely not over it! 😍

Bro has more intelligence than the entire US government right now.

    Damn sheppard was hot

Respect for the lack of respect for pretentious drama 😆

    Say it, Joe!

I know he’s older now but recent photos don’t do him justice. I saw him in person not that long ago, and when he smiled at me I just about died lol

Why am I not married to this man and is he single? 🫠

Thank god you didn’t ask him how he “felt” when he talked about his dad dying. Feel like a lot of interviews try to get so dramatic. Props for being respectful letting him tell his story and move on.

Sheppard was (and still is) my favorite chill action hero. No bs, no ego, just get the job done and not afraid to be snarky about it.

I love how he pointed out how serious he is right now but if you look at his social media he’s so fucking funny

god I miss that smirk of his. I used to watch the show with my mom when it was first on tv and she was constantly commenting about the ‘twinkle in his eyes’ lol

Joe Flanigan is on my top list of people to kick back and have a drink with while ranting about the world right now 😄

Proud to be a sci-fi nerd!

How is he still so cool

Sheppard was kind of like O’Neill, Kirk, and Solo rolled into one. Honestly one of the big reasons Atlantis outshines SG1 for me.

Not enough actors getting political right now. The world is burning and no one seems to care. THANK YOU JOE for having the balls to say it out loud.

If you talk to him again, I’d love to hear his thoughts on the backstage politics involving Torri Higginson being ousted from the cast so they could bring on Amanda Tapping just because they had a prior contract with her. Joe seems like the kind of dude who would be open to talking about all that, and though I love the whole show, that’s one thing that bothered me. Weir was the heart and soul of the series, and while I love Carter in SG-1, she did not belong in Atlantis. I’d be interested in hearing him comment on those behind-the-scenes politics.
