Joe Flanigan

Joe Flanigan’s starring role as John Sheppard in the beloved space exploration series Stargate Atlantis has brought viewers joy for decades. The show ran for five incredible, action-packed years, often crossing over with the ten-year hitΒ Stargate SG-1 during their overlapping seasons. The Stargate franchise means a lot to many people, with beautiful production design, fantastic characters and storylines, and a whole lot of heart, so I’ve been looking forward to speaking with Joe, especially since his background is unusual for someone in the arts. After starting out as an advance man for the White House and a stint at a magazine, he took up acting on a whim and ended up developing a real passion for it. But he also remains heavily involved in social matters and has been focusing on those topics more than ever since the wildfires and pandemic, so sitting down to hear his insights on not only Hollywood but also the state of the world was a very different and interesting experience, and I’m pleased to share our conversation today.

    SGA reunion in See!

  3. SwanSong says:

I know SG-1 was the original but SGA slightly beats it out for me. It always felt lighter and more familiar, like these were people I knew.

I’ve had the pleasure of going to several conventions where he was appearing and he always seems actually engaged and caring about the fans. He always gives us the same energy we put out, and yeah I know it’s a job for him but with some celebrities you feel that, but with him, you feel like he wants to be there.

  5. Maximus says:

You hear all these stories about people with no idea about the film industry going into acting for the most random reasons. David Boreanaz was approached while walking his dog. Joe had a neighbor who seemed happy and overpaid and figured what the hell. Why can’t I land a great job out of nowhere like that?

Wait, stop, hold everything! Next episode needs to be the two of you doing improv!

I’ll never get over the studio wasting time and money on Universe instead of giving Atlantis a few extra seasons.

  9. Selena A says:

So good to hear from him! He’s the best!

  10. Layla says:

I’d love more episodes like this, getting into real-world stuff in addition to the entertainment elements. Like he said, it all ties together.

  11. Jesse Knight says:

The whimsical vibes of 90s/2000s TV are sorely missed in this day and age. Literally everything now is about being so badass and dark and nonstop pathos. We need a revival of the lighter ensemble adventure shows.

  12. Richard S says:

I hope you do more of these with scifi stars

  13. Jackson E says:

Powerful (and saddening) views on the state of the world, but all on point.

  14. Harvey says:

He’s such an interesting and passionate person

  15. Alexa Kyne says:

everyone says sheppard and teyla should’ve gotten together, but meanwhile im over here wish we’d see him with weir πŸ™‚

  16. Evan says:

    Aw this made my day!

  17. Anonymous says:

Well now I want to see his improv comedy…

  18. Anonymous says:

I worked at a convention where he had a panel once and he was one of the most approachable people I’ve ever worked with. And I work with a lot of sci-fi/fantasy types, many of whom are….meh. So that was a surprise!

  19. Down Under Dude says:

Appreciate these friendly interviews. Brings back so many memories!

  20. degreeskelvinohno says:

I’m so glad they never paired up Sheppard and Teyla. It would’ve been the typical thing to do, putting the male and female leads together, but instead they just kept them super close friends/family, which was beautiful.

  21. Mason G says:

No offense to SG1 but the wraith were far superior enemies to the Goa’uld and we won’t even talk about the Ori….

  22. ABBA says:

    πŸ’—πŸ’—πŸ’—πŸ’—πŸ’—πŸ’—

  23. Cali Cynic says:

    God I love him.

  24. N Vern says:

That was the golden age. We need more old-school shows like Stargate.

  25. Michaela says:

Personally I love the bearded look.

  26. Rallys Things says:

Hi, I love the range of people you’ve had on here so far! Any plans to feature other Stargate/sci-fi alumni?

  27. Runty says:

i need more of this man in my life!

  28. T Wellington says:

If there’s a new Stargate show, we NEED Sheppard and Todd to be in it. Just facts.

  29. MrBlabs says:

I watched See just to see Joe and David together again and was not disappointed.

  30. Anglo Aria says:

I fell in love with Joe Flanigan the moment Sheppard said “That’d be Dr. Weir, right?” to the obnoxious colonel in the first episode.

  31. Cocobear says:

The wraith were INCREDIBLE. True character villains, not just some bonkers guy bouncing off the walls like a maniac. Miss those days.

  32. Lauren Liddell says:

Joe Flanigan and Jason Momoa were an awesome pair. I miss their calm chemistry.

  33. R Jasper says:

Joe was a phenomenal leading man. I wish we’d seen him in so much more.

  34. Rae Farley says:

Still waiting for a new stargate show..

  35. Claudia says:

I miss Atlantis so much. That show was magic. Also had one of the best intros ever.

  36. Rick Wernicky says:

You know you’ve got a good TV show when it still holds up decades later and is entertaining a whole new generation

  37. Mr Saltz says:

I’ve seen the Stargate shows so many times, it honestly throws me off when I see the actors in real life and realize they are not the same age lol. In my mind, they’ll always be younguns.

  38. H Rupert says:

Joe’s performances are always so calming and almost zen. I would’ve loved to see Sheppard meditate with Teyla. Bet he wouldn’t have fallen asleep like Ronan.

  39. GracieAU says:

I appreciate how respectful you were about letting him guide the conversation. So many interview style podcasts just talk over the guest and it makes me insane. I’ll be following for more.

  40. Wile E Dog says:

Of the 3 SG shows, Atlantis had the best balance of human drama and alien insanity. SG-1 was really human-centric and military and SGU was just….whatever it was. We deserved more than 5 years of Atlantis!

  41. Shadowmax says:

I usually never watch interviews so I didn’t know what to expect but JF seems really nice and cool. No airs.

  42. AbracadabraBiches says:

SGA is peak TV. I’ve been binging it again lately and miss how well shows used to handle sociopolitical issues. Now it’s just a mess!

  43. pellmellhell says:

Sga is one of my favorite shows of all time.

  44. Peter Wardsdale says:

If they can make that atrocious Scrubs reunion then surely they can do SGA, which is a million times better.

  45. Anonymous says:

One hundred percent agree. How can anyone watching sci fi not understand that social commentary is literally the heart of this genre?

  46. Anonymous says:

One of my favorite photos with an actor is one I got with Joe a million years ago. It’s in my special memento scrapbook and I still look at it and feel happy from time to time.

  47. Anonymous says:

Comedy is HARD work man. I get it, I can’t keep a straight face either. I’ve been acting for years and I’ll only ever do drama because the lighter stuff is too hard for me to immerse myself in.

  48. Anonymous says:

I’d like to nominate Joe Flanigan for president to wash away this awful administration!

  49. Anonymous says:

Super laid back and secretly intellectual, he’s literally Sheppard!

  50. Anonymous says:

Joe is such a cool dude
