Joe Flanigan
Joe Flanigan’s starring role as John Sheppard in the beloved space exploration series Stargate Atlantis has brought viewers joy for decades. The show ran for five incredible, action-packed years, often crossing over with the ten-year hit Stargate SG-1 during their overlapping seasons. The Stargate franchise means a lot to many people, with beautiful production design, fantastic characters and storylines, and a whole lot of heart, so I’ve been looking forward to speaking with Joe, especially since his background is unusual for someone in the arts. After starting out as an advance man for the White House and a stint at a magazine, he took up acting on a whim and ended up developing a real passion for it. But he also remains heavily involved in social matters and has been focusing on those topics more than ever since the wildfires and pandemic, so sitting down to hear his insights on not only Hollywood but also the state of the world was a very different and interesting experience, and I’m pleased to share our conversation today.

SGA is one of the few spinoffs in history that was not only enjoyable but as good as the original and a big part of that was the cast, especially Flanigan’s chilled out attitude and likeability.
Class! I wish more actors would talk about how collaborative filmmaking is and give the credit where it’s due to all the hardworking folks on the lower rungs.
I wouldn’t mind hearing this bloke do a regular show on the sociopolitical nightmare we’re living in right now.
In the whole Stargate franchise, Atlantis has the best vibe hands down. There’s just something about it that pulled me in even more than SG1 (and we will not speak of SGU). The setting and visuals were a big part of that but even more so the cast. Joe Flanigan and David Hewlett in particular carried the show and made it so much more fun and relatable. I’ll always love SG1, but it definitely had a more formal military feel. I preferred the civilian-driven feel of Atlantis, where Sheppard as a less by-the-books soldier was supporting the scientists rather than the other way around.
This was a very interesting interview. I was hesitant about the political aspects but since hes literally got a background in it I’ mimpressed!
Joe is so fascinating to listen to. He’s so well informed and passionate about his views. We need more people like him speaking out!
That alternate reality episode set in Las Vegas is such a great example of what Joe can do as an actor. He deserves way more recognition.
Having worked at a high-profile magazine myself, as well as some major film sets, I respect his ability to stand there unfazed while some self-important editor is yelling at and firing him lol
You’re very good at setting the topics and then letting your guests run with them 🙂
Yep. Any time I hear Joe Flanigan talk I know it’s going to be good.
Atlantis is one of my all-time favorite series. And I watch a LOOOOT of TV my dudes.
I just want to go for a drink with this man. He’d be so cool to sit around and shoot the shit with.
I rewatch SGA every couple of years and am never less impressed by how damn good it is.
goddamn, he worked for Interview magazine at one point?
The idea of a flying city gave me so much creative fuel as a teen.
New SG series in the works!! Hopefully itll be on the level of SG1 and SGA and not try to be all edgy and gritty like SGU. Bring back the days of Sheppard and McKay!
Him and Tayla should’ve ended up together.
I’m so excited to see Joe on your podcast!!!! This was a great talk!!
Nicely done.
I know everyone is bashing Universe but I actually enjoyed it. SGA was obviously the best though!
Goddamn, his comments about humans not actually wanting reason is too on point right now.
Glad you’re continuing to do these interviews. I’m enjoying them immensely.
He’s so nice and zen.
Rewatching Stargate Atlantis and I forgot how much Joe Flanigan carried that show. His humor and timing was so good.
Wow, Joe is so much more interesting than I realized! I figured him for just a typical Hollywood guy, but he’s got an incredible background and is so intelligent and involved! New respect!
Awesome! Looking forward to more.
I had so much fun watching SGA back in the day, and then again every 5 or so years ever since. Very grateful for this nostalgic interview!
A friend recently sent me here and I’ve been making my way through your show and enjoying it very much.
Always fun to hear from Sheppard!
AAAAAHHHH perfect timing, I’ve just started a new rewatch of all things STARGATE.
He should be a producer on the new Stargate series. He knows what’s needed and could reprise his role too, maybe as a general this time.
At least one man in Hollywood has his head on straight…
The rest should take lessons
I need moooooore Atlantis
I agree with people saying he looks like Harrison Ford now lol
TV these days just doesn’t have “it.”
I love the whole cast but Sheppard is still my favorite character 🙂
Sheppard and McKay made the show. Why do people care about Ronan?
Sci-fi and politics have always been intertwined and Joe explained that well. Very cool.
Wish he would’ve talked about GH. He played the best therapist
Joe Flanigan is THE GOAT.
YES. Joe Flanigan rules. Thanks.
Good call, neighbor! He definitely had the right look. One of my first crushes <3
No nonsense, no fuss, just a straightforward conversation between two people. Great stuff.
How did you get all these actors and directors and famous authors on a brand new podcast???
Yeeeeeah it’s John Sheppard!
SGA is one of my fav shows of all time. Glad to see this! And I humbly request more retro scifi people!
My life would be complete if you could bring Sheppard and Todd on for a joint in-character inteview
Excellent!
Sheppard was IMO the best of the Stargate soldier leads. I like how Flanigan played him casual but serious. Andersen got way too ridiculous with O’Neill after a point and as much as I love Browder in Farscape, Mitchell didn’t really stand out in the last two seasons SG-1. I didn’t dislike him but he didn’t have as much to work with. Flanigan had the best balance of the three.
Atlantis SHOULD have run for 10 years like SG-1 instead of them wasting time and money on Universe.
