Joe Flanigan

Joe Flanigan’s starring role as John Sheppard in the beloved space exploration series Stargate Atlantis has brought viewers joy for decades. The show ran for five incredible, action-packed years, often crossing over with the ten-year hit Stargate SG-1 during their overlapping seasons. The Stargate franchise means a lot to many people, with beautiful production design, fantastic characters and storylines, and a whole lot of heart, so I’ve been looking forward to speaking with Joe, especially since his background is unusual for someone in the arts. After starting out as an advance man for the White House and a stint at a magazine, he took up acting on a whim and ended up developing a real passion for it. But he also remains heavily involved in social matters and has been focusing on those topics more than ever since the wildfires and pandemic, so sitting down to hear his insights on not only Hollywood but also the state of the world was a very different and interesting experience, and I’m pleased to share our conversation today.

I super appreciate the longer interview. He’s got a ton of great things to say and actually hearing him have a chance to talk it out is so good.

  2. Anonymous says:

Wow, he’s really humble. He’s kind of like Sheppard 😄

  3. Elenor says:

    He still captivates me 😍

  4. Dylan M says:

He seems like such a wonderful fellow! Enjoyed this one a lot.

  5. Anonymous says:

I love how he’s pretty much just a more jaded version of Sheppard😆

  6. Jose says:

10/10, nice natural interview. Looking forward to many more!

  7. FriesandFreaks says:

Oh my god imagine being buried under prop rubble while your phone’s ringing off the hook only to find out what’s going on when you finally finish the scene. Devastating.

  8. Big Bad Wolf says:

I miss seeing Joe on screen but mad respect for getting back into politics and documentaries and stuff if that’s what calls to him.

  9. G Ross says:

Well damn, I had no idea Sheppard was such an interesting person in real life. I respect his ability to speak out so candidly about the current administration because uuuuuugh.

  10. dawsonscreekgirl says:

    What a class act!

  11. gemini george says:

I loved this and both of you!

  12. TitanBFan says:

Stargate Atlantis was the golden era of this genre. Now today it’s all about being gritty and edgy. Nothing is fun anymore.

  13. Scuba Lonnie says:

SGA was the bomb. Can’t believe they ended it in favor of the abominable and short-lived SGU.

  14. Randy TM says:

Thanks for the great candid interview my friend!

  15. L Brightberry says:

I get that Joe’s more invested in the social and political stuff right now but I want him back on screen in a new show.

  16. clarioncallawakening says:

Joe is a great guy! One of my favorite interviews so far!

  17. Kaylabear says:

Thank you two for this great convo! Nice treat for us old school sci-fi fans 😉

  18. Zaid says:

I’ve always liked Joe but hearing him burn the current administration makes me even more certain of his awesomness.

  19. Barkley B says:

What we need is Dr. Rodney McKay to come and save teh planet right now.

  20. Derek Can says:

I didn’t connect as much with SG1 but Atlantis was absolutely gold!

  21. Steno Lamar says:

I fell in love with Sheppard the moment he sat in that chair in Antarctica. Joe is still hot af today.

  22. Dammit McKay says:

Except for Rodney, the men on SGA were such great examples of non-toxic masculinity. There was no real ego, no pushy gender roles, everyone just loved and respected everyone else. It was way ahead of its time (and ahead of the present even now tbh)

  23. Maximum trekker says:

Sheppard was like a way more likeable, less shallow with women James Kirk. I still crush on him lol.

  24. Catarina says:

A friend of mine named her son first and middle name John Sheppard LOL.

  25. Radiofox says:

Atlantis is GOATED. Still one of the best out there.

  26. freaksandgeeks says:

One of the few times I don’t mind longer podcasts. He had so much of value to say.

  27. Elena B says:

Thank you guys for keeping it real. The system is broken and the rest of the world is laughing at us.

  28. R Coburn says:

I wonder if Joe’s family – and kids especially – have watched Atlantis and what they think of seeing their dad fight aliens.

  29. Dr Watson says:

The man’s aged like fine wine

  30. Exiled to Nirvana says:

Alien vampire evolved leech people were one of the best villains in any show ever and I will die on this fucking hill.

  31. Kitsune says:

Appreciate you doing these recordings. You’re good at making people feel comfortable.

  32. Normal Limne says:

it would be so cool if you could bring on more people from Stargate both sg-1 and atlantis. i’d love to hear you talk to david hewlett and amanda tapping especially.

  33. Anonymous says:

Am I the only one who sees him in an action political role like the president in Independence Day or something along those lines?

  34. Farley says:

I loved the whole Atlantis cast but Joe was always my top fav. He had a vibe.

  35. Nina S says:

I’ll never forget the chills I got watching Atlantis rise from the ocean that first time. Still gets me!

  36. CoraFan says:

Sheppard wasn’t as quirky as O’Neill but he was still a lighter figure. I took him more seriously though.

  37. Lucas says:

Science fiction and fantasy kept me alive in my darkest hours. I’m forever grateful to everyone who brought these stories to life.

  38. lorneytunes says:

“a pretty high level of fortitude” sounds like a hell of an understatement for working with people who threaten you with the IRS if you disagree. Bro must have balls of steel.

  39. c3poat says:

This was such a good talk and sorely needed with the world being what it is right now…

  40. Georgie G says:

Hey I’d like more of you two talking. Could’ve listened for another hour 😉

  41. Polkabean says:

MGM bastards should’ve let Joe and Jason buy the rights to the show to continue it. Infuriating!

  42. Keith says:

Bring us more Stargate right now!

  43. ValidatorNye says:

I’ve never been able to choose one or the other. Both SG1 and Atlantis were frakking gold, which is rare, as spinoffs are normally inferior. But in this case, both series had such incredible showrunners, casts, and characters that they are both equally exceptional. You can tell they loved what they were doing too.

  44. Jenny McKay says:

This is so good, thank you!

  45. Anonymous says:

    Respect!

  46. A Hobbit says:

I hope the new SG series doesn’t lose the feel of the originals like the newer Star Trek shows did.

  47. Kerryck says:

So cool that his model/actor neighbor randomly got him into the biz

  48. Dudester says:

Perfect interview. No pressure, no BS.

  49. worldcitizen says:

lmao even from the picture on front he’s still got that iconic unkempt Sheppard hair

  50. Doran says:

    Stargate reunion when pleeeease?
