Joe Flanigan

Joe Flanigan’s starring role as John Sheppard in the beloved space exploration series Stargate Atlantis has brought viewers joy for decades. The show ran for five incredible, action-packed years, often crossing over with the ten-year hit Stargate SG-1 during their overlapping seasons. The Stargate franchise means a lot to many people, with beautiful production design, fantastic characters and storylines, and a whole lot of heart, so I’ve been looking forward to speaking with Joe, especially since his background is unusual for someone in the arts. After starting out as an advance man for the White House and a stint at a magazine, he took up acting on a whim and ended up developing a real passion for it. But he also remains heavily involved in social matters and has been focusing on those topics more than ever since the wildfires and pandemic, so sitting down to hear his insights on not only Hollywood but also the state of the world was a very different and interesting experience, and I’m pleased to share our conversation today.

Ok I’ll say it. Sheppard was so much better than O’Neill. Richard Dean Andersen is great, but there was a bit too much arrogance there. Flanigan felt more real and was never over the top.

He worked in the White House???? What? How?

  3. Laura P. says:

That was a great balance of lighter snark and deeper conversation. Thank you for bringing us more of Joe Flanigan!

  4. Jessie Sloane says:

Any chance Joe will show up in the new stargate series? It’d be cool to see what Sheppard is up to after saving Atlantis 🙂

  5. Electra says:

Joe seems so genuine. No superficial nonsense.

  6. Hawkeyes says:

I think Sheppard is just Joe’s real personality coming through. He seems like a warm, kind person who’s very real and doesn’t bullshit people. Respect.

  7. Yaxley says:

    Great show!

  8. DarkMark says:

He seems so relax with you.

  9. Dennis Fogerty says:

okay, here me out: bring joe back for another episode BUT this time with other SGA actors for a joint special reunion

  10. Morgan Lester says:

Thanks for such a chill interview!

  11. Erica04yt says:

LOL now I’m picturing Richard Dean Anderson walking onto set and flinging script pages over his shoulder like nope, nope nope

  12. Hilary Keller says:

This was a great and much-needed episode!

  13. David Carter says:

I love both shows equally but I think we can all agree that Pegasus looked so much better.

    1. LostinSpace says:

Agreed. The SG-1 underground bunker had a nostalgic charm in an Area 51ish way, but I gasped when they first crossed into Atlantis, it looked so pretty and alien and so much more open.

      1. allyoops says:

Exactly. SG-1 was my jam too but the color schemes were much more vivid and the sets felt more unique and enjoyable to watch on SGA.

  14. B Berman says:

I think I was reluctant to let go of O’Neill in the beginning and wasn’t as into Sheppard, but as the show went on, I came to appreciate him so much more and now he’s a favorite.

  15. Jake Z says:

Joe seems like the nicest dude.

  16. calibird5 says:

    Great job once again!

  17. Dominic says:

Such a pleasure to listen to, both of you!

  18. DareenJ says:

I just adore how calm and cool this man always seems.

  19. ProtecttheTaumeba says:

My kid is already humming the theme music to both Stargate shows and I can’t wait to properly watch it with her when she’s a little older.

So did you take his advice and sign up for a comedy class? You kept waving it off but I kind of agree that you’d be good at it haha

  21. Bremner says:

Great interview. Joe’s insights on what’s happening in this country are peak.

  22. 00Fxf says:

I wish you could bring Joe back for a talk with David. I’d like so much to hear them together again!

  23. Therianthrope says:

Nice interview! Thanks for bringing us more Joe Flanigan!

  24. Captain Trip says:

Wow, what a crazy background! “Circuitous” indeed.

  25. Gardinia says:

It’s nice that you treat him as his own person. The number of interviews where people can’t seem to separate actors from their characters is just annoying.

  26. Anonymous says:

I’m CRYING at his instagram. Glass half full hahaha

  27. Bradley Mcray says:

I think it was Jason Momoa who said that being part of a famous and enduring sci-fi or fantasy series is better than being in any movie because the people who watch it and share it over and over become like family, and it’s so true. The characters in SGA feel like watching family, which makes it special.

  28. Jon says:

Growing up in Germany, I only heard the dubbed versions for a long time. I remember finally getting to see the English versoins and being so mad we didn’t get those at home. SO much better to hear Joe’s real voice and performance.

  29. Samuel says:

Everyone’s talking about Stargate and I’m thinking how much I loved him on GH lol

  30. Janet B says:

    I MISS YOU JOE.

  31. MillersCrossing says:

Enjoyed this so much! I have to break out my Atlantis DVDs again now.

  32. Dero says:

This was an unexpected treat! enjoyed hearing Joe’s opinions on the craziness.

  33. SimoneL says:

Joe’s amazing! Once of the best episodes you’ve done yet!

  34. Birchking says:

I know it technically shouldn’t affect how I feel about a character but it makes me happy that Joe has a brain and is a good guy unlike so many other self-absorbed actors out there.

  35. LegionWeAre says:

I’m so happy to hear him give so much credit to the crew and everyone involved in the production. Most actors don’t unless it’s high-level crew occasionally. Class act.

  36. gingermouse says:

He’s so different but also so similar to his character in that ultra calm, collected vibe that just feels balanced and real…

  37. Krista says:

    One of my favorite dudes!

  38. MyCorvet says:

I’ll be bouncing off the walls if Sheppard returns for the new series.

  39. FinnicksGirl says:

I went into Atlantis skeptical because RDA is my everythng and I didn’t think I’d be as into the new cast, but I think I ended up loving them even more.

  40. Anonymous says:

It’s nice to hear him talk about comedy so enthusiastically because he’s so damn good at it and I think most people don’t even know that.

  41. Systemofaclown says:

I can’t believe that one guy screwed him over in the reading! How is he so calm about it? I’d have flown off the handle XD

  42. IsekaiGirl says:

Just rewatched all the shows and I love them as much as I did the first time around and every time since. Atlantis had one of the best vibes ever.

  43. Anonymous says:

Joe doesn’t get enough credit for how funny he is. He’s great at the action and drama and all but goddammit he’s hilarious.

  44. wolframandhart says:

Now that’s how you have a solid interview.

  45. PuddleJumper says:

Not Gate Ship One! Never Gate Ship One! 😉

  46. TheThalmor says:

    Seriously strong and respectful interview.

  47. Ivan K says:

    Legendary

  48. Logan says:

Oh shit, brutal way to get that phone call…

  49. Normal Lee says:

I miss SGA. Still one of my favorites.

  50. SenseiTom says:

I’d love to hear more about what he’s up to in the political sphere right now
