Joe Flanigan

Joe Flanigan’s starring role as John Sheppard in the beloved space exploration series Stargate Atlantis has brought viewers joy for decades. The show ran for five incredible, action-packed years, often crossing over with the ten-year hit Stargate SG-1 during their overlapping seasons. The Stargate franchise means a lot to many people, with beautiful production design, fantastic characters and storylines, and a whole lot of heart, so I’ve been looking forward to speaking with Joe, especially since his background is unusual for someone in the arts. After starting out as an advance man for the White House and a stint at a magazine, he took up acting on a whim and ended up developing a real passion for it. But he also remains heavily involved in social matters and has been focusing on those topics more than ever since the wildfires and pandemic, so sitting down to hear his insights on not only Hollywood but also the state of the world was a very different and interesting experience, and I’m pleased to share our conversation today.

The lighter, more adventurous feel of SGA > cold military feel of SG1.

  2. Delilah J says:

I know we should all beware of parasocial relationships, but I’ve always felt so close to the casts of SG-1 and SGA. They truly do feel like extended family, both the characters and the actors who play them. And yes, I know the actors aren’t their characters, but their performances and world mean so much to me and so many of us over the years!

  3. DropTopGaming says:

SGA was a great show in just about every way, but frankly Sheppard and McKay pulled it all together. I don’t think it would’ve been the same without Joe and David and the way they played those characters.

  4. artofthesteal says:

Did anyone else see him and Jason and Guinness together? Hah

  5. Rainbow Falls says:

    Justice for Ford!

  6. Cory McMann says:

I’ve been a fan of his since I saw Rising. So good.

    GENERAL JOHN SHEPPARD NEXT PLEASE

  8. E Wiley says:

Charlaine Harris, Simon Evans, now Joe Flanigan… I’m so envious! How do you get to talk to all these people?

  9. Lilah E says:

My bff and I are always arguing over whether SG1 or SGA is better. I’m a Sheppard girl 🙂

  10. R Marley says:

I’m sitting here queueing up Rising Part 1 right after finishing this podcast

  11. SpocksCurse says:

He still sounds great. Awesome talk.

  12. Anonymous says:

Hah! No one can say he doesn’t speak his mind!

  13. Common Enemy says:

My friend worked at the White House briefly. Can confirm he had similar stories 👀

  14. Rens says:

    Iconic!

  15. TongaLine says:

May I ask a question? How do you contact known actors like this to get them on your show? Don’t they charge an arm and a leg to appear on these things?

  16. The Pale Moon says:

What made these older sci-fi shows so good was they had heart and soul. REAL heart. Too many shows these days feel entirely soulless. I never appreciated what a gift it was to have series like these that made you feel like part of the cast and story.

  17. MarathonMan says:

I get so tired of clicking on videos to find the interview are only 2 minutes long. I love that this didn’t rush and let the actor truly TALK.

  18. Marcel says:

Next time Joe and David together!

  19. Ragne says:

Great ep! Love hearing Joe talk.

  20. Zero to Hero says:

I’m impressed by his knowledge of politics and the fact that he worked in the White House. Like damn.

  21. Rachael F says:

I’m not familiar with everyone you’ve spoken to but I love Joe and checked out your other episodes after and you’re very good at this so I’m listening through and discovering new people 🙂

What I have learned from my 34 years on earth: people are stupid. Joe definitely says it more eloquently but that’s what it boils down to!

  23. Filli Vanilli says:

Sheppard fighting his evil doppleganger still lives rent free in my head.

  24. BaylorBrat says:

I’m cackling at the image of him standing there wondering why this dramatic magazine executive is screaming at him

  25. Alun says:

If there’s another Stargate spinoff, I demand Sheppard and Mckay.

  26. Mariokart before the horse says:

I had such a crush on Joe in SGA and after hearing this, I respect him even more. Change is needed!

  27. Jude M says:

I’d love to hear more about the shit he saw during his stint in the White House.

  28. madisonwheels91 says:

Sci-fi is the best genre for a mix of escapism and social exploration. Shows like this kept me sane even when things got unbelievably rough, and they always taught me something too.

  29. MicDrop says:

It will be a crime if they don’t have Sheppard on the new Stargate series. At least in the same way O’Neill and Jackson were in the SGA pilot to help with the transition to the new chapter.

  30. Alicia says:

    Great interview ❤️

  31. Mechanics and Marathons says:

I miss shows like Stargate and classic Star Trek, with messages and moral dilemmas that really make you stop and think about what’s going on and what it means and how it relates to the real world. Too many shows today are either bashing you over the head with exaggerated political correctness or not talking about these issues at all. Everything is extreme instead of intelligent and balanced as it used to be.

  32. lock stock and three barrels says:

    I miss Sheppard!

  33. Hounds of the Village says:

I heard he did sensory training for his role on See. Maybe if you do a followup, you can ask him about that show since it was a semi-reunion with Jason Momoa and David Hewlett.

  34. Fennec says:

SO loved hearing you guys talk! He’s a great dude and just so low key, no ego. Interested in checking out the other episodes too.

  35. Woodsprite03ext says:

Thank god you know how to talk to people. Some podcasters can’t stop interrupting their guests or fanboy/girling out and it makes things so awkward. This is how to do an interview.

  36. Humanoid says:

Atlantis should’ve had ten years like SG-1!

  37. Parker says:

You’re killing it with these conversations!

  38. WardenoftheCoast says:

    Thank you! Great work!

  39. Sigil says:

Hearing him talk makes me so happy (and sad because of what’s going on right now).

  40. MoonMaster says:

Joe’s badass views of today’s political crisis is a tonic I didn’t know I needed XD

  41. Anonymous says:

Smart and nice. I need one.

  42. Son of Jor-El says:

I’ve been waiting ages for a long interview like this where Joe can just speak his mind about how things are going in the world. His insta has lots of that but it’s much shorter so this was very cool.

  43. PlayerOne says:

I would never survive in film and TV. I’m too anti-drama but not in a cool way like he described, mroe just “I can’t do this and now I’m stressed out and want to hide in a cave”.

  44. lily rose says:

K I’d normally roll my eyes at the political talk but Joe actually knows his shit so I’m on board.

  45. kaylon4 says:

Joe always seems so amiable and approachable. I’d love to meet him someday!

  46. 007Bond says:

A little late to it but just subscribed! Hoping for more soon.

  47. Mistocles says:

To this day, there are only a handful of TV shows that make me feel the way Atlantis does. It should’ve gone on for even longer.

  48. Morgan says:

Can someone tell me which episode joe was talking about where they’re buried under the rubble?

  49. Brevin says:

Anyone else think Joe’s got a Harrison Ford look going these days?

  50. KellyM says:

It was so cool seeing him in Jason Momoa’s new show. I love that they’re still like brothers after all this time!
