Joe Flanigan

Joe Flanigan’s starring role as John Sheppard in the beloved space exploration series Stargate Atlantis has brought viewers joy for decades. The show ran for five incredible, action-packed years, often crossing over with the ten-year hit Stargate SG-1 during their overlapping seasons. The Stargate franchise means a lot to many people, with beautiful production design, fantastic characters and storylines, and a whole lot of heart, so I’ve been looking forward to speaking with Joe, especially since his background is unusual for someone in the arts. After starting out as an advance man for the White House and a stint at a magazine, he took up acting on a whim and ended up developing a real passion for it. But he also remains heavily involved in social matters and has been focusing on those topics more than ever since the wildfires and pandemic, so sitting down to hear his insights on not only Hollywood but also the state of the world was a very different and interesting experience, and I’m pleased to share our conversation today.

No, none of us can speak to the madness going on in today’s white house….. I shudder to think :*(

  2. Kiara says:

    RETURN ATLANTIS TO US

  3. Lilith G says:

He should be the guy running the base in the new series like Hammond was!

  4. Jenny Leary says:

Joe Flanigan as Sheppard is a freaking legend. Thanks for bringing more of him to the fans!

  5. dangermouse says:

Miss seeing this man on my screen! I’m sad he’s doing less acting and doing more politics but I get that it’s needed right now.

  6. Leonardo says:

Joe’s so humble and you can tell he genuinely loves what they did on that show. It makes me tear up. I miss the Pegasus Galaxy!

  7. Melling S says:

Kudos on the interview. Still waiting on a followup SGA movie!

  8. Blake L says:

I love the cover art of him in front of the gate!

  9. Ms Lisa says:

He’s such a good speaker and really knows his stuff. Why isn’t HE the one in office?

  10. Flash Gordon says:

It’s so rare that I love a spinoff as much as the original, but this is one of those cases where I can’t separate my love for the two. It’s all Stargate and it’s all incredible.

  11. cambridgefool says:

    Nice! Keep these coming!

  12. Davros says:

Long time fan of Joe’s from Wales here! I came to this show for all the Welsh actor features but it’s so good to see someone like this on here too!

  13. Loretta Geisel says:

“Operation “This Will Most Likely End Badly” is a go” is still one of my favorite quotes from the series.

    1. The Art of Imagination says:

Pretty much sums up their entire operation lol

  14. Gil says:

The perfect guy to lead Atlantis!

  15. Galaxylight says:

I love these casual convos. You live up to your claim!

  16. PavlovsCat says:

I’ve officially subscribed and am playing your other eps on my long drives to and from work. So good.

  17. AtariMad says:

I’m with you, it’s really sad that people who claim to love things like Star Trek and Stargate can have views that are completely contradictory to the messages in those shows. I have to wonder if they’re even really watching.

  18. Courtney Barnes says:

    Great stuff!

  19. hooverdamned says:

Nice. Joe always gives interesting insights into the business.

  20. Mad Hat Mike says:

It’s so funny hearing him talk politics when Sheppard was like…the anti-politics.

  21. Jackobi says:

Hey, great series you’re doing here! Subscribed!

  22. Nicola Little says:

I’ve always wondered if Joe calling Jason Momoa “Chewie” was in the script or something he improvised because I know they were super close and that would be hilarious.

  23. Robopocalypse says:

Maaaan I wish I got to see more of him. I’d give an arm to go to a convention at some point but I never have the time or money to travel to one and there are none near me.

  24. Anonymous says:

I miss Sheppard and McKay’s madness! Joe had such good comedic timing and delivery. My brother and I went around back in the day threatening each other with lemons because of the ridiculous citrus thing 🤣

  25. Stu Bulman says:

Keep these great interviews coming please!

  26. FlannerysFool says:

I’ve always loved Atlantis but I don’t watch interviews much so tbh I didn’t realize he was so intelligent and outspoken. Need to look up more of him now.

  27. Israel Stewart says:

I think it speaks volumes that these shows and actors are still so truly loved by so many people around the world even after 20+ years.

  28. ManicMandy says:

Oh Pegasus galaxy, how I miss you so

  29. Angeboden says:

Top interview! Joe seems like an awesome guy.

  30. Latchkeykid says:

Been listening through all of your episodes and so far enjoyed them all. Following!

  31. Kenneth says:

Saying he would get up on stage to accept an award only by making it clear it belongs to everyone who worked on the project is such class. Good actors know it’s about collaboration and not just about them.

  32. Jenga Jones says:

Just finished listening and have to subscribe immediately. Big fan here of friendly chat style interviews instead of the q&a format.

  33. Preachy says:

oh i love this. following now!

  34. PonyWrangler says:

    So awesome. Thank you!

  35. Ironica says:

I’d like to take a moment to remind everyone that Joe Flanigan tried very hard to BUY the rights to SGA, sinking his own money into it to keep it going, and the studio refused because that whiny bastard Roland Emmerich wanted to kill the TV franchise – which, by the way, was way more successful and loved globally than his cheesy old movie – so that he could make and profit from a couple more cheesy movies, and then he abandoned it anyway. It’s disgusting. They should’ve just sold Joe the rights to keep an actual working series that people LOVED going.

    1. Fargate Universe says:

JFC this has ALWAYS absolutely crushed me and makes me so angry.

  36. Mac the Knife says:

Years later and Joe is still the man. I’ll never not love hearing him talk about anything and everything.

  37. Kelly H says:

Heh I love that he got into acting on a whim because of a neighbor.

  38. somethingquiet says:

    Best of the Colonels!

  39. Hannah T. says:

I wish this was a regular weekly podcast. I’m enjoying listening to these on my commutes when they come out but I need more.
    😉

  40. stargatefan says:

There’s literally no reason Sheppard and McKay couldn’t come back for the new SG series to help kick it off. So let’s see it happen!

  41. CassiusMassimo says:

Great work. Following and perusing the other episodes now.

  42. Mobius says:

This time was the best time for science fiction television. There’s almost nothing good in this genre on air since then.

  43. David Sowell says:

This changed my view of Joe. Bigger fan than ever.

  44. Rhodri says:

I’m still trying to wrap my head around the idea that he used to work in the White House…

  45. Luckyc says:

Props to anyone who can handle showbis so calmly and not get beaten down by the insane behavior.

  46. Yasmine says:

    Great interview!

  47. Jinx says:

    Nice vibe you two

  48. Rob Yole says:

Joe Flanigan and Christopher Heyerdahl are still one of my favorite screen enemies. I wish we’d gotten more of those two and their snark.

  49. RalphLaurante says:

The studio should’ve let him and Jason Momoa buy the rights to the series to continue it later.

  50. Red Cliff says:

Everyone’s equating him to his character of Sheppard but am I the only one that’s hearing A LOT of Rodney McKay when he’s talking politics? lololol
