Joe Flanigan

Joe Flanigan’s starring role as John Sheppard in the beloved space exploration series Stargate Atlantis has brought viewers joy for decades. The show ran for five incredible, action-packed years, often crossing over with the ten-year hit Stargate SG-1 during their overlapping seasons. The Stargate franchise means a lot to many people, with beautiful production design, fantastic characters and storylines, and a whole lot of heart, so I’ve been looking forward to speaking with Joe, especially since his background is unusual for someone in the arts. After starting out as an advance man for the White House and a stint at a magazine, he took up acting on a whim and ended up developing a real passion for it. But he also remains heavily involved in social matters and has been focusing on those topics more than ever since the wildfires and pandemic, so sitting down to hear his insights on not only Hollywood but also the state of the world was a very different and interesting experience, and I’m pleased to share our conversation today.

It makes me happy when stars appreciate the projects they’re part of. Joe seems like a really down to earth dude.

  2. Rossman says:

He genuinely seems like an amazing person to talk to or have a beer with.

  3. OboniMax says:

How do all these people get discovered by chance without any interest in acting and land a hit film or show? Where can I do that?

  4. DCV says:

I don’t know how I ended up here but I’m along for the ride now and happy to be.

  5. BNite02c says:

    Joe Flanigan speaking the truth!

  6. Todd of Seville says:

These are getting better and better. Can’t wait for the next one!

  7. Delta Phi says:

Sheppard and McKay MUST be in the new Stargate series. That seems not optional.

  8. Kings Crafts says:

Will you do another episode with him at some point? I’m sure there are so many more things you could ask him about!

  9. Stewie Raust says:

I’ve been waiting to see him in a Western! He would be SO FLIPPING GOOD in a show like Longmire.

  10. angelcakes says:

Am I the only one who wished John and Teyla had gotten together? They would’ve been such a good couple! Flanigan and Luttrell had beautiful chemistry.

  11. MormonLite says:

Definitely an incredible and kind of wtf trajectory to Stargate 😀

  12. DarthMoore says:

I miss Joe calling Jason Momoa Chewie

This is what I mean when I talk about good vibes y’all!

  14. Bethany KB says:

I for one would’ve loved more Sheppard AND O’Neill like we got in the pilot. They played off each other well and we never really got to see them together otherwise.

  15. Mikey says:

“He was always having so much fun and getting overpaid” lololol

  16. Anonymous says:

The honesty is refreshing. Hollywood is cutthroat.

  17. Charlie says:

Fan of Sheppard since the pilot. Now a fan of Joe too.

  18. Orions Belt says:

I’d love to see more Sheppard and Mitchell together. They’re such a stoic pair but we never got that chance for a bromance.

  19. muffin karaoke says:

Atlantis had a longer run than most but still wasn’t enough :*(

  20. Rory D says:

Question: Is Sg-1 or Atlantis better?
    Answer: Yes

  21. eagleeye says:

we’ve entered the age of binge watching everything with these complex ongoing stories, but there was something to be said for more episodic series that you looked forward to each week.

  22. woad warrior says:

This is a great interview style. You keep things moving but don’t ever feel like you’re rushing him. I vote for more!

  23. Alison says:

    Ugh my dream man

I’ll admit I’ve been to a lot of conventions and met a lot of science fiction actors, so I’m primed to like them, but Joe Flanigan has always been one of my favorites. He’s so darn nice to everyone, and also fun and intelligent to talk to. Big fan!

  25. abracasnabra says:

I have been utterly and unapologetically binging SGA once more after listening to this episode LOL. And STILL loving every second of it.

  26. Candice says:

    Atlantis = Best Stargate

  27. Chronicles of Kane says:

The Atlantis spinoff was superior to the original. I miss those characters and settings so much. That feel is gone from TV today. Now it’s all trying to be like the movies, fewer episodes and shorter stories. Blah.

  28. EEK09 says:

Wow, I never appreciated just how much drama can go down with agents and casting and all that. I loled when he said he never signed a contract with them just picturing the looks on their faces.

  29. 004 says:

Wow he seems like such a cool guy.

  30. Damon's Apothecary says:

The SGA cast, more than almost any other cast I’ve seen, really pulled you in and made you feel like you were home and with a bunch of wacky cousins or friends. You felt like part of the team and my family and I always loved that.

  31. T Chew says:

    “Meredith?!” 🤣

  32. Kaiju Bless you says:

Sheppard was my dream man when I was in college. Kind, down to earth, attractive, smart, loyal….
Ok you got me, I’m putting on an episode haha

  33. DCHero says:

it makes me all warm and fuzzy that Joe and Jason are so close in real life. Jason should’ve gotten him a cameo in Justice League!

  34. Mary E says:

Came to the Stargate series late and just finished the first season of Atlantis. Loving it! So this was very cool to get a sense of who the actor is in real life.

  35. usfrontierfolk says:

Nice chat with a genre legend!

  36. Alyssa C says:

    Still makes me swoon

  37. Cadrian says:

“See” was fantastic and it was good to see Joe in a show with Momoa and Hewlett again. Would’ve loved to hear him talk about that a bit!

  38. Maiden Jane says:

Well said, Joe. Current White House must be a fucking clown car.

  39. lockStockbarrells says:

Joe is my happy pill these days. He’s so damn clever and interesting. Why doesn’t HE run for office?

  40. FraterlyMay says:

I bet a new Stargate movie would make bank right now.

  41. Galaxyquest says:

Joe is amazing and so thoughtful and intelligent. Extremely underrated in so many ways.

  42. GateChronicles says:

His attitude towards bad social/political stuff is badass and no nonsense. Go Joe!

  43. J Lovell says:

Fan from Amsterdam here. I miss seeing him on my screen SO much.

  44. Sean Stormlight says:

Flanigan should lead the new SG show. The new Hammond basically. He’s got the grizzled look for it these days.

  45. OrdinarySuperhero says:

I heard a new Stargate series is coming out soon and I’m so frelling excited as long as it’s well written and has soul like the og series.

  46. meridian falcon says:

Oh my! The beard in the picture… He should be the new general on the fourth show.

  47. Danny B says:

Joe’s background is nuts. So interesting that he worked for the administration! I enjoyed hearing him talk about all that as much as the Hollywood/industry stuff.

  48. Theresa T says:

Took me a bit to catch up but this was a good one!

  49. Anonymous says:

    Joe is the bomb!

  50. booleanstrip says:

Bless Joe but I could never work in that environment, white hour OR screamy magazines. Sounds horrendous.
