Joe Flanigan

Joe Flanigan’s starring role as John Sheppard in the beloved space exploration series Stargate Atlantis has brought viewers joy for decades. The show ran for five incredible, action-packed years, often crossing over with the ten-year hit Stargate SG-1 during their overlapping seasons. The Stargate franchise means a lot to many people, with beautiful production design, fantastic characters and storylines, and a whole lot of heart, so I’ve been looking forward to speaking with Joe, especially since his background is unusual for someone in the arts. After starting out as an advance man for the White House and a stint at a magazine, he took up acting on a whim and ended up developing a real passion for it. But he also remains heavily involved in social matters and has been focusing on those topics more than ever since the wildfires and pandemic, so sitting down to hear his insights on not only Hollywood but also the state of the world was a very different and interesting experience, and I’m pleased to share our conversation today.

    Man he’s so cool

  2. mckaysmission says:

Sheppard held the show togethers and kept the characters a family. Joe’s performance made him feel so natural and relatable.

  3. Faramore says:

I MISS HIS CHARACTER OF SHEPPARD SO MUCH.

  4. Maxine says:

My hubby and I just watched the first few episodes of Atlantis with our son and I’m pleased to say he’s already addicted.

  5. Jordy says:

just me or Joe should be in a series like Yellowstone? he fit in so well

I love that RDA was so loud and fun. But Sheppard had this quiet, calm, commanding vibe that really did it for me 🥰

  7. Anonymous says:

Joe Flanigan standup tour incoming? 😇

  8. MiragesGirl says:

Shows like Stargate did things right. Nowadays it’s all CGI and green screen sets instead of building actual sets where the actors can interact with the world. I think Daniel Radcliffe and co mentioned that during the HP reunion, how special it was for them having such magical sets to work in instead of everything being green screen the way it is now.

  9. The Last Man says:

I would’ve watched a spinoff just about Sheppard and Todd. The frenemy bromance that we deserve.

Interviewer: Directs the flow of conversation well. Doesn’t interrupt. Gives room for natural thoughts.
Guest: Gives genuine responses, not media trained canned answers. Goes with the flow.
    Result: 🙂

  11. Davies Rhys says:

Thanks a million for this. Can’t wait to see who else you’ll bring on.

  12. Yam Sorrow says:

Why they ended a great show like Atlantis in favor of two maligned seasons of Universe (aka Stargate Depression and Pathos), I will never understand. SGU was a flop for a reason. They should’ve given SGA two extra years instead. No shade to Robert Carlyle but he was no Flanigan and Hewlett.

    JOE FLANIGAN IS THE GOAT.

  14. Ellen Mouse says:

Incredible conversation! Made me so nostalgic and also pissed off because WTF modern world!

  15. DiamondAgeMeep says:

If you tell me tomorrow that the SGA cast will return for the new show, I’ll be bouncing off the walls for real boys

Y’all see his instagram post about all the horrible things that are doing well since the clown in office took over? Fucking genius.

  22. Devon L says:

    Thank you both! Excellent discussion!

  23. KnightoftheRealms says:

Nicely done interview. Hearing Joe talk so snarkily about the stupidity in government right now is refreshing.

  24. Morgan says:

    Thanks for sharing!

  25. Jensen V says:

Atlantis was the most enjoyable chapter of the Stargate franchise.

  26. Sign of the Times says:

I see so many comments about SGU and have to wonder if people would’ve liked it more if Joe Flanigan was in it LOL

  27. Holden says:

My man! Still a top-tier show.

  28. cerealkiller says:

Sheppard was like a more down to earth Kirk. All the women loved him (understandably) and he was adventurous and fun but more low key.

  29. Anonymous says:

My #1 crush ever since I saw him speak at my first convention way back when 😍

  30. Bowden says:

man, the character of Sheppard was such a big influence on me growing up!

  31. Tim Mirren says:

What a lovely conversation! The world sucks right now but it’s nice to hear him bring levity to the insanity.

  32. JDl4 says:

Sheppard was always good with the dark humor at times. McKay was good at panicking haha

  33. Anonymous says:

LOL 90% of actors doing interviews are giving cardboard cutout safe answers and my man’s over here just spilling all the tea

  34. MaritimeGallery says:

Back in the days when series could reel you in without gratuitous nudity, sex, drugs, and swearing. Just good old-fashoined storytelling and character dynamics. God I miss it.

  35. Omega Maaaan says:

Joe in the last man on Atlantis episode will never not break my heart

  36. Anonymous says:

he went from not knowing what actors even are to starring in a massive scifi classic, how cool is that

  37. Arturio says:

What a fun and intelligent man!

  38. Markie says:

Hearing Joe tear apart stupid people in government is exactly what I needed today.

  39. Ollie says:

Wait, why are people talking about a new stargate show? There’s a new one? When???

  40. Halle Tome says:

Oh gods this brought back so many memories! Sheppard was one of my first fictional crushes lol. Hope you’ll do more!

  41. Levi says:

    General John Sheppard incoming.

  42. behemoth master says:

Man I’m really liking these chats. Good vibes all around.

  43. Tara B says:

I work in film as a makeup artist now, but dammit I wish I’d been in this line of work when the show was still airing. Working on a series like Atlantis would’ve been a dream come true, but I missed it 😭

  44. B Hansen says:

I appreciate you for these lovely interviews.

  45. Anonymous says:

“Clowns? Oh yeah the clowns. We fight them too. Entire armies spilling out of Volkswagens.” 🤣

  46. Greta L says:

What equipment do you use for this?

  47. Anonymous says:

He will never not have the messy Sheppard hair and that makes me happy.

  48. BlackHawkRising says:

He’s so articulate and pleasant, and he really knows what he’s talking about instead of talking out of his backside like so many celebrities. This was an amazing conversation to kick back and listen to. Thank you for doing this!

  49. Darien says:

This made me miss Atlantis so much. I think I’ll have to do another rewatch soon.

  50. Jaime says:

Joe kicked ass in Doppleganger. His own, to be exact!
